Spreading
These are the tamarisk beetles that are an introduced species that were meant to tame the tamarisk plant, which is an exotic species that has overrun the southwest a bit. Unfortunately these beetles are spreading much more widely and rapidly than expected, and are beginning to destroy the habitats of many bird species, such as the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher. We do some monitoring work with these guys, and they are indeed spreading...
