New Warblers

We continue our streak of catching at least one new species for the season every day that we band!  At this point we're up to 13 species of warbler.

Today was our first Yellow Warbler, with this nice young male.


We also had this young male Black-throated Blue Warbler early in the day.




Most excitingly we caught this Worm-eating Warbler late last week.  This was only the third captured here in the fall over the last decade.

Montague Plains

Went banding today in Montague with my bro.


We caught around 20 birds, including: common yellow throat, chestnut-sided warbler, prairie warbler, black-throated green warbler, black-throated blue warbler, ovenbird, gray catbird, eastern towhee, black-capped chickadee and wilson's warbler.

Yesterday four of us got on a boat, out of Bodega Bay, for a day of seabird (and other wildlife) viewing. It was an amazing trip, lead by Rich Stallcup, lasting from about 7am to 4pm. These birds were all new to the others and me, so it was incredible to watch Rich identify and call out birds from hundreds of yards away, as we worked to get our sea legs. Bird ID aside, taking pictures of flying birds from a boat was just as difficult as I expected but so fun, as they are out in the open and often getting quite close.
